When considering the diagonal grid—or diagrid—structural framing system, the engineers and architects realized that the corners of many floor plates would extend as much as 20 ft (6 m) beyond the nodes of the diamond-shaped framing. The tower is exposed to the street on three sides but abuts an apartment high-rise to the west. To maximize the amount of open floor space in the tower, the structural core was located along the west side rather than in a central position.
